If holly (Ilex aquifolium) finds its leaves being nibbled by deer, it activates certain genes to make the new leaves spiky when they regrow. As a result, taller holly trees have smooth-edged leaves higher up, out of reach of herbivores, while the lower leaves develop prickly edges.
