This month, the Gallery welcomed Imuetinyan Olaitan-Mark, Chief Conservator from the National Museum, Benin City, Nigeria as part of an ongoing partnership with Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums & Monuments (NCMM) made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of State Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. During her time at the Gallery, Mrs. Olaitan-Mark will focus on strategies for the conservation of metal objects in the Gallery’s African collection, and share her knowledge of the metalworking traditions of the ancient Kingdom of Benin.

Have you seen this wonderful character on view in the Gallery?

Located in the Art of the Ancient Americas galleries on the first floor, this vessel’s coloring and motif are typical of ceramics from Cholula, an important city in Mesoamerica during the Late Postclassic period (1200–1521). Such vessels are referred to as Cholula (Puebla) style. This example includes the head of an eagle with a ferocious stare, a bulbous body, and the claws and tail become the tripod support for the vessel.

In the Aztec world, birds were usually associated with the celestial realm; the sun, moon and planets, yet they often were also considered messengers between the living mortals and the inhabitants of the supernatural realm. To the Aztecs, birds of prey were connected to human sacrifice, and the bulbous body of this vessel may have contained the heart of a human sacrificial victim, in the hopes that the once-beating heart would join the mythological world of the gods.
