A former trustee of PAAM, L’Engle is known for his WPA-era social realism style. He was invited to exhibit a painting of similar social realism subject matter, “Cement Workers,” at the 1939 World’s Fair.

Our annual Benefit Auction of early Provincetown art highlights some of the most significant names, scenes, and themes throughout the history of the Provincetown Art Colony. As well as showcasing the incredible breadth of early Provincetown art, PAAM’s annual Benefit Auction is an important fundraiser for the museum.

Today’s featured Auction piece is Lot 60: “Still Life with Skull” (1944.), an oil painting by Grace Martin Taylor (1903-1995). Taylor was the younger cousin of Provincetown printer Blanche Lazzell, who encouraged Taylor to pursue her artistic talent. After a divorce, the artist removed her former last name, Frame, from her signed works. This piece was exhibited at the Retrospective Exhibition of West Virginia University, 1958.

✨ Little Artists: Ages 6-8 | Wednesdays, 4-5pm | October 11-November 15 | Free of charge

Little Artists offers a creative, engaging space for early learners to dig into the sensory experience of art-making. A wide variety of media and projects are explored through process-oriented learning designed for experimentation and creative development. Programs are offered in the summer and throughout the school year.

✨ Art Reach 101: Ages 12-14 | Saturdays, 10am-1pm | Free of charge
Semester 1: October 7-December 16 | Semester 2: January 13-March 23

Intermediate program for new or returning students ready to dig into higher-level artistic concepts, specific core content, and engage art in a broader context. Students will also get exposure to new mediums and approaches and get introduced to art history and contemporary art.

✨ Art Studio: Ages 15-19 | Saturdays, 10am-2pm | Free of charge
Semester 1: October 7-December 16 | Semester 2: January 13-March 23

Advanced program for new or returning students interested in cultivating their portfolio and deepening their focus and practice. Students will be pushed to explore their creative identity and cultivate intention and direction in and through art making. Students will continue to develop their knowledge of art history and contemporary ideas. Art Reach Studio takes a holistic approach to creative expression and welcomes aspiring artists as well as students not interested in pursuing a future in the arts.

Today’s featured Auction piece is Lot 63: “Portrait of the Artist’s Daughter, Helen” (n.d.), an oil painting by Gerrit Beneker (1882-1934). Like many artists of the era, Beneker, a founding member of the Provincetown Art Association, worked for the Navy during WWII creating posters and illustrations for the war effort. This tender piece serves as a powerful contrast, with the piercing detail of Helen’s eyes and the single perfect golden curl. His daughter Helen was a frequent subject of his paintings throughout different ages.

“Elephants Parading in Provincetown” (1930), which was used in a piece in the Provincetown Art Registry referring to “Elephant,” a woodblock print by Florence Bradshaw Brown, suggests that there were, at some time, indeed elephants in Provincetown, and Brown’s print was likely created there.

Ramos was a prolific Provincetown artist who worked in a wide range of media – painting, mixed media collage, and drawing. Loved ones remember the spectacular secret garden he created at his Provincetown home. He died of AIDS-related causes in 1988.

Starting in the early 1950s, the artist spent summers painting in Provincetown—a place of abundant inspiration, whether in isolated contemplation of the environment or in interaction with the town’s vibrant arts colony. According to the artist, “The first time I saw Provincetown, I knew it was for me.”

Tomorrow (Thu, 8/24) at 6pm: Join us for a Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture with Jane Paradise, author of “Dune Shacks of Provincetown.” Admission is Included with Museum entry ($15, free for PAAM members), or watch live on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@PAAM1914

On the wild back shore of Provincetown Massachusetts writers, artists and families made summer homes in the early 1900’s. Affectionately called the dune shacks, some were originally life saving huts in the late 1890’s but most were constructed in the 1920’s and 1930’s out of debris and ship wrecked ruins.

Some of these original shacks survive today – some restored, some bandaged, some dilapidated – all loved. Each shack is unique with its own personality and its own name.

Through these photographs Jane Paradise gives a flavor of what it is like to live in a dune shack and/or experience the dune landscape. Most shacks are occupied in the summer, very few in the winter. But the landscape is always accessible.

The Fredi Schiff Levin Lecture Series welcomes artists, art historians, curators, and authors to speak at PAAM, both in conjunction with exhibitions and as independent scholars. The series was established in honor of artist Fredi Schiff Levin, an active member of Provincetown’s arts community from the 1960s until her passing in 2002. We extend our deepest gratitude to The Levin Family, who graciously sponsors this series.
