Brian Tracy started painting with oils in high school in the mid sixties. The seventies was an art free period, then he started painting with watercolor in the eighties making Christmas cards. After retirement in the late nineties he went back to school and got a Fine Arts degree from the University of Connecticut. He now paints in both oil and watercolor with a focus on landscapes. Farms and their barns and outbuildings are of particular interest because they are disappearing at an alarming rate. Many of the buildings included in his paintings are gone now, so he wants to paint as many as possible while they are still standing. He also likes to paint portraits, mill buildings, and animals.

Most of the time, the inspiration comes from the colors of the season I am in. I start 'playing' with some of the stones/crystals/pearls/shells/beads/glass I have (lots of them!) and let the pieces 'talk' to me...I don't know how else to convene how an idea is born in my mind. I often arrange and re-arrange different components in different patterns/shapes until I like what I see...the rest is a semi-random addition/subtraction of colors and shapes, which will be surrounded and enhanced by tiny seed beads, bits of ephemera, silver, gold,crystal...and other (sometimes organic) material. I have also used my own painted art as cabochons or focal pieces. Color remains a central focus of all my work. I also am inspired by other bead artists' work, their creativity and choice of color combinations. The challenge of re-purposing an old piece has proven to be quite an inspiration by itself. Sometimes, meeting a customer's vision to make it a reality fuels my imagination outside of my comfort zone. And that is always welcome.

I consider myself an artist and craftsman, I'm constantly engaged in making things, objects both useful and whimsical. As an artist I have specialized in wooden sculpture which I see as an extension of drawing. My favorite subjects are the human figure and the face. I occasionally delve into abstraction. As a woodworker, I saw native lumber from my own woodlot and make wooden containers and furniture objects. Over the years I have built up a good deal of capability including building my own shop from scratch,and have the means to obtain my own materials and convert them into almost anything. I was originally going to open and have visitors, I’ve decided that it is better to close up this year. The hype has me worried! Hope to see you next year!

Gretchen Geromin and Lauren Merlo work as a team, collaborating on unique, handmade boards and signs with woodburned decoration. Lauren has been working with wood for over forty years, creating beauty and comfort for area homes with the closet organizers, cabinets, doors and other items that he builds. He brings his expert eye, fine craftsmanship, and a keen attention to detail to his work. He wants everything that he makes to "look like it belongs there." Using his finely-honed carpentry skills, he makes cutting boards and signs that show the rich character of the wood. Gretchen has been creating art and riding horses since a very young age and woodburning since she was ten years old. She still has her first woodburning tool. While pursuing a serious equestrian career, she has also incorporated her artwork into many endeavors. She has done numerous woodburned portraits of horses, dogs, cats or whatever else her clients desired. Gretchen's original woodburned art completes the boards that Lauren makes.

Barbara is a sculptor and potter working with clay. She creates simple forms based on, and evocative of, ancient rituals, artifacts, and shamanic figures. When she discovers forms in clay, she is conscious of the continuity with other artists as they have created objects for thousands of years using the same methods of shaping and processing the most elemental material available. She lives in the woods in northeastern Connecticut where she creates in a large, light, beautiful studio. She travels as frequently as possible to Europe and other more exotic places both for pleasure and inspiration. In the past few years she has found Ethiopia, Iran, Outer Mongolia, India, Russia, and the Silk Road through China and Central Asia to be wonderful sources of stimulation.

My paintings reflect the beauty of the New England landscapes, with its old and new barns, towns, rolling hills, ocean beaches and shores, brooks and waterfalls, flowers and people. Starting with a planned and controlled approach to each painting, I surrender to the spontaneity of the creative process, taking the liberty to edit the reality and loosen up the brushstroke. I’ve always been into art, but in 2009, I discovered my passion for woodworking. I met a neighbor that made amazing sculptures using burled wood. What’s a burl? A rounded knotty growth on a tree, giving an attractive figure when polished and used especially for handcrafted objects. I got the burl bug, so to speak, and discovered I had a “natural flaire” for woodworking. Today, I find myself longing to work with various species of burls. I get excited when I come across them and can’t wait to see their beauty revealed through shaping, sanding, and oiling. I love to make art but realize there is a practical need to meet for people who consider purchases. Therefore, I find that balance between sculpture and furniture as art. I make small novelty items that may only cost $20, all the way up to large burl tables in the thousands! The rarity of burled wood in the retail market allows me to show people items for the home that have so much more character to them. I gravitate to making end tables, coffee tables, mirrors, bowls, wine racks, and so much more! Most people comment that the wood is so smooth, they feel like they are touching glass. I try to use very thin protective finishes so that the wood “feel” is not lost. I know I’ve found my passion in woodworking. I hope my passion inspires others to find theirs!

Sherie began working as an artist in 2008 focusing on ceramics, but discovered enameling in 2011, and now works almost completely in the art of enameling. She works with a technique that uses the firescale as a component of the design. She makes jewelry, buttons, and is currently working more with enameling formed metal.

I have been working with wood for over twenty years. I have always found wood turning intriguing so in 2013 I bought my first lathe and started to develop a new skill. I enjoy turning bowls mostly but turn other items as well. I start with the hunt for interesting wood to work with from logs, firewood and burls. Using a chain saw, I will cut bowl blanks from found wood and rough turn the bowls. You never know what the wood will reveal until you turn it. It's like Christmas morning every time. The rough bowls are then sealed and set to dry for up to a year. After drying they will be finish turned, sanded and a finish applied. At this time they will be ready for use. Sometimes a customer may have a tree taken down in their yard that is meaningful to them, and they will contact me to turn a bowl for them as a keepsake.

I make assemblages in the folk art tradition. The vast majority of my work arises from inspiration generated by the objects themselves rather than from a preconceived creative intention. However, once there has been an initial creation, other similar work that is more intentional often follows. Thus, my work tends to evolve around themes. One theme of my work is flower-like assemblages for gardens made from found metal and glass elements.The stems of the "flowers" are made from electric conduit and the bases are often break rotors. A second theme is small bouquet like assemblages for inside display. A third theme is imaginary animals constructed from skulls, metal, bones and jewelry.I have a managerie of more than 30 animals. A recent theme involves assemblages that I refer to as “wallflowers.” Many of my pieces are intended to amuse and I feel successful when viewing the pieces elicits a laugh, giggle, or a smile. On the other hand, some of my pieces may offend or make people cringed and those reactions also indicate success. My assemblages are held together by nuts, bolts and various adhesives. I do not weld but will sometimes have pieces welded. I use simple tools such as a grinder, drill, sander, saws and pipe benders. My assemblages are sometimes painted, sometimes rusted or oxidized, and sometimes coated with polyurethane. People call my pieces whimsical, creative, or weird. All good.

My Plein Air Landscapes are a vivid interpretation of landscapes from my travels in the US and Canada. My objective is to express all the colors in nature, not just seeing the blues, greens and browns, but the purples, oranges and reds that are more elusive to the eye. I always do preliminary sketches to figure out how I can improve the scene if I tweak the buildings, hills or location of trees. I also draw my sketches inside a box on the sketch pad so I can extend the sketch in any direction. It’s also important at this stage to decide where your light source is coming from for the direction of shadows. I work primarily on artist sand paper using a variety of Sennelier, Rembrandt and hand crafted soft pastels. I sometimes use a pastel and alcohol wash or watercolor base when starting my paintings. I feel it’s very important to apply your lights and darks first to create the feeling of depth in my paintings. I generally work the whole painting, not by object, but building up color by applying the light or dark areas and then working toward middle ground. I think it’s just as important to know when to end a painting as how to start it. I have been painting pastels for over forty years and never grow tired of the challenge and joy in seeing my interpretations on paper.

Using encaustic, photography and multi-media, my work explores the realms of connection - how our striving for intimacy affects our relationships to ourselves, others, nature, and the world around us. I attempt to evoke a sense of how the "ordinary" things in life can bring us to larger truths of the struggle between fulfillment and longing, grasping and letting go, and the transitory nature of our experiences. I like to create pieces that include natural elements, photographs, letters, old books, illustrations, metal and 3-D objects, to create a feeling of mystery and surrealism. In the studio I'm surrounded by a wonderful collection of vintage ephemera and other curiosities (you can see studio photos on my FB page). I begin most often by gathering pieces and objects to see how they "speak" to me. After some playing with composition, I begin to build the piece, interweaving the elements between layers of luscious encaustic. I add color, embed ephemera, scrape and score the wax, add oil stick, transfer images onto the wax, all in an organic way, letting my materials inspire my actions. I’ve always been attracted to colored glass, from the vibrant candy-like colors to more subdued, natural hues. Fusing glass is like an alchemy of its own. I love the smooth flow and graceful contours of the finished product. I work in my barn studio, overlooking my alpaca herd, and much of my inspiration comes from the nature, often with a touch of whimsy. Glass is cut and carefully placed, then fired to the desired temperature in my kiln. Glass transforms in the firing process, colors change and shapes soften. I never know what treasures I might find when I open my kiln!

In 1825, William Jillson was putting the final few touches on his Stone House. Only a few years before, William, his brothers, Asa and Seth, and their father Luke had come to the village of Willimantic Falls to seek their fortunes. The Jillsons were experienced clothes-makers before they came. Luke Jillson had made his reputation as the inventor of the first water-driven satinet machine. William, a banker, was hired by the Windham Manufacturing Company to repair and reset the machinery in their first mill along the Willimantic River. William Jillson built a home for his family out of a durable and readily available gneiss stone. More unusual though, is the type of masonry design that he chose for his stone house. Architecture of the Jillson House, built in 1825 of stone quarried from the nearby riverbed, was the finest in the city. It’s distinctive appearance and extraordinary structural strength result from the use of uniform blocks of granite with carefully dressed edges lain in an ashlar pattern of alternate broad and narrow courses. There is a magnificent carved stone arch around the fan-light over the front door. Not long after the untimely death of William in 1831 at age 39, there began a period of benign neglect and steady decline of his Stone House. The building was divided into apartments for a time, and became used as storage space by a local mill operator. In 1920, it was bought to become a single family dwelling, but was again abandoned when the last family member died in 1965. In the 1970’s, urban renewal was planned for Willimantic, with the Jillson Stone House among those buildings under threat of the wrecking ball. However, through the untiring efforts of the late Dr. Brae Rafferty, a former President of the Windham Historical Society, there was hope for preservation of this valuable historic and architectural landmark. Through his meticulous research and unwavering tenacity, the Jillson Stone House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. In the early 70’s, the House was fully restored under the urban renewal project by the Willimantic Redevelopment Agency. It was turned over in 1975 to the city of Willimantic, which in turn sold it for a token amount to the Windham Historical Society. Ever since, the Housed has served the Society well as a home for its activities and collections.

Kathleen Zimmerman received artistic merit scholarships and academic grants from the University of Hartford Art School in West Hartford, CT after she was awarded a public commission from High Plains Arts Council in Loveland, Colorado. At the Art School, she earned her BFA majoring in sculpture & printmaking. Since graduation, she has taken printmaking workshops at Zea Mays Printmaking in MA, made molds of large-scale sculpture for Lands End Sculpture Center in CO, taught art at Irving Robbins Middle School in CT, participated in a five-year residency in Beijing, China, worked with the master printmakers at Modern Multiples in CA before opening up her own art studio in CT. Her artwork is in both public and private collections. Kathleen Zimmerman's love affair with form, along with her natural tendency to use symbolism and surrealism in her work, has come together to create her distinctive visual language and more recently written language. Zimmerman uses this language to communicate ideas concerning relationships, the environment and culture. Elements of the natural world, especially animals, are the subject matter she uses to express these ideas. Drawing, printmaking, sculpture, the written and spoken word are her medias of choice.

Weaving a life, a life of weaving. A good fabric has to start with the loom being in balance, the yarns all have to be even in tension and centered. Patience.Then comes the rythmn of weaving. Throwing the shuttle through one shed, beating the weft in, changing the shed. Patience. Add some color and lots of exercise. Feet dancing on the treadles, fabric flows from the loom. Starting from traditional practices learned at The Marshfield School of Weaving in VT, my work has evolved over four decades into complex colorwork in simple weave structures. This is most evident in the dish towels made for everyday use. Each one is a minature color experiment. Magic takes place in the washing and drying process. The fibers bloom and subtle weave structures emerge. The towels are soft and absorbant. The design and creation of chenille scarves provides me with opportunities to play with color, pattern and texture too. This yarn, with its velvety texture, is unparalleled for its luxurious softness, drape and intriguing play of light and shadow. Each one is unique. I approach rug making in the same way. Using several strands of wool to create a sense of movement, they are evocative of landscapes, sunsets over the ocean or mountains. The rich colors of fall, the delicate greens of spring or a rainbow after a summer shower offer abundant inspiration. Tradition and practicality merge in my use of rags as material for rugs. A useful repurposing has come about by taking fabrics or old clothing, curtains, holey blankets and the like and turning them into rugs for customers who want to hold on to the memories and recycle at the same time.

Kim Bova creates photographs of the natural world including: flowers, landscapes, still-life, and places traveled. Growing up in an artistic family shaped Kim's path in life. She learned by her father’s side how to use a camera, which became an integral part of her life. Even though she was trained as a classical pianist earning a Masters from Eastman School of Music she always had a camera nearby. When starting a family upon returning to CT in the 1990's, she enrolled at in the Photography program at UCONN's Fine Art School. Her kids were her subjects at first and she enjoyed photographing life around her. Once she realized that she had been training for this her whole life, she started her own business of Wedding and Portrait Photography and never looked back. Now, as she retires from her Wedding and Portrait business she has time to concentrate on her own personal vision as an art photographer.

Oriental (Chinese) Brush Painting is an art form that has a close relationship to writing. Chinese calligraphy, the art for writing ideographs with a brush, imitates nature’s rhythms and movements. It is regarded by many as the purer, even higher, form of artistic expression than painting. The common tool for both Oriental writing and painting is a brush made of animal hairs such as goat, rabbit, weasel, wolf, horse or, believe it or not, mouse whiskers, in ascending order of stiffness. The brush, tapering to a point, has been described as “the most sensitive and richly potential instrument for painting ever devised.” With the brush and the calligraphic strokes, painting evolved into a system where the subject came first and foremost, the artist’s inner feelings second and finally, of least importance, the actual result set down by the artist. For example, a lonely recluse living in the mountains sees and paints not the real mountain, but the mountain of his mind and his experience. This allows a broad basis for painting style, seemingly realistic or completely abstract. It is the quality of the strokes that indicates mastery in the painting.

My art reflects the every day beauty that I have to come to appreciate in my town, and places I have visited. A mostly self taught artist, I have drawn or painted all my life. After having children, I decorated their rooms with murals of their favorite characters, eventually spreading my art to my family and friends homes, and now further. From fields of sunflowers, spring trees in bloom, snowy landscapes, or places I travel, I can find inspiration anywhere. I also tend to be inspired by tractors or our family’s wedding car, a 1929 Model A ford, which I have placed in many paintings. Primarily painting with oils, I prefer a looser style, where the viewer has to work a bit to see details within the brush strokes. I want to make my viewers see things in everyday life that they may have missed. To appreciate beauty. Because to me that is what life is about... Appreciating the little things. I hope that my artwork gives you as much pleasure as painting it gave me. I have also written two children’s books, “The Watering Can”, about children growing up, and “Cousins” about the bonds of family. I try to paint daily, and when not painting, I dream of traveling with my loved ones.

I have been beading for about 13 years. At first, my creations were simple earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Now I have expanded to household objects such as fan pulls, cheese boards and home décor. I have learned French knitting, Viking knitting, Kumihimo (a Japanese form of weaving), a little Chain Mail, along with wire wrapping, wire weaving, and more. I have fun wrapping or just beading finished semiprecious stones, rough stones, glass, sea glass, beach stones, crystal, pearls, wood, and acrylic beads, etc. Some designs are classic, funky, delicate, or not so delicate. I use different colors and sizes and make-up of wire and metal beads from copper, silver, silver plate, gold plate, and more. I enjoy doing repairs and special orders. I also take pleasure in the people, both adults and children, who stop in and browse and chat or learn to make their own pieces. The peace of my studio is my delight.

We’re a husband/wife team combining engineering skills and wood sculpture techniques to create functional woodenwares for kitchen and tabletop. We handpick each board, debate how best to use its grain & figure. We do NOT use duplicating machines or laser cutters. We raise the grain twice and sand twice. Finally, we rub two coats of oil deep into the grain with our hands. We built a new workshop in 2020--deep in the woods. We are totally off the grid. In our new shop we are expanding our teaching programs, promoting Hand-Made (not mass production) and educating about locally produced work, sustainability and care for our environment. We have Open House events and Fun in the Forest programs! Our goal is to make cooking & entertaining a visual and tactile pleasure. We imagine unknown hands and eyes enjoying the sensuous shapes, smooth textures, and luscious wood grains. We love knowing that our utensils create delectable recipes and our serving wares grace tables around the world. Using only New England hardwoods, we strive to leave a small environmental impact. This work has become our life as a couple. We leave bits for each other to play with. We finish each other’s pieces. The result is a collaborative dance, with surprises along the way.

Michael Beattie was born in July 1949 in the small paper mill village of Eagleville in rural Eastern Connecticut. As the second eldest of four children, he learned early on that hard work was the only avenue to survival in a poor envirornment. After enlisting and serving four years in the military during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971, he returned home to Eagleville, where he was hired as a police officer in the Town of Mansfield. While working the night shift, he opened his own security business, which he operated during the day until his retirement at the age of sixty five.

In 2010, at her husband's encouragement, she decided to follow her dream and started studying and working as a fine artist. Her favorite subjects are still life, pet portraits and building portraits. She has held several solos shows in Connecticut and has exhibited in group shows at gallery128 in New York City, with the Connecticut Juried Art Exhibit at the Slater Memorial Museum, The Lyme Art Association, Arts of Tolland, Windham Regional Arts Council member shows, Manchester Art Association, Glastonbury Arts and Tolland County Arts. Micky's art is in several Connecticut public locations, including the Windham Town Hall and the Corpus Christi Catholic Community, as well as being in many private collections.

As a kid, I probably fell in love with clay when I made a clay hand-print. As a sophomore in college, I became hooked from the first time I threw a ball of clay onto a kick wheel. After graduation and Master's degree in art education, I brought my passion for clay to South Windsor, teaching art in the schools for 36 years. Most of my work is functional: items for storage, drinking, eating. Jars, mugs, casseroles, berry bowls. My forms are classic and simple, with a goal to create a piece that pleases the eye, feels good in the hand and functions well. My favorite compliment from a customer: "I use your mug every day because it feels great in my hands." I work in a mid-range stoneware, firing my pieces in an electric kiln. I make the earthy glazes myself, and they work together with the clay to present a warmth that enhances food and graces the table. I like to overlay one or more glazes on top of the primary glaze to give interest, richness and depth. The glazes enhance my forms with no need for additional decoration, keeping costs down, and making my pots more affordable. My love for making pots comes from the feel of the clay and its plasticity, allowing the visions I have in my head to come to life by my hands and wheel. And, because each glaze kiln is different, opening it is like experiencing Christmas many times during the year!
